Father Andy Davy, MIC, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Plano, Illinois, also writes poetry. Here, we share some of his work and his commentaries on that work in the fourth installment of a weekly series.
A Children's Chorus
Colored leaves dancing as they fall,
Caught up in spiral Spirit.
Laughing funnel cloud climb'd tall,
When children sing so dearest.
Leaves Whirl! Blur! Soar intensely!
No adult can claim such speed.
But jump in! And directly
Feel the song the children lead.
This one describes my school children singing a praise song over Zoom with me during the pandemic. As I watched each of screens erupt in joyous motion, it reminded me of the energetic playful glee of the little ones! Each one a unique leaf, twirling in the joy of the Lord.
"Jesus said, 'Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven'" (Mt 19:14).
There is also a glimmer of the joy found at the center of Trinitarian communion.
Woodpecker Gift
So much time wasted
So many things untasted
When we pursue the hunted.
All eyes on the horizon
Brings blindness to the chosen
Unable to see vertical's call.
A Woodpecker alights
above my chair,
To be surprised with,
when unlooked for:
I cast aside my questing
For the goal.
This poem speaks of a real life encounter with the beauty of God's creation. When we stop trying to make prayer happen on our own terms - when we surrender to what the Lord desires - then the Lord more freely is able to surprise us with grace. "Grace is everywhere" - A Diary of a Country Priest.
