“The Cup of Thirst”by Br. Stephen J. Camara, MIC

“Shall I not drink the cup that the Father gave me?" – Jn. 18:11

 
What is this cup?The cup of thirst.
And is it painful?Of sufferings the worst.
Who, then, will drink?The one who must come.
Where will he come from?A heavenly home.
Why would he leave?To save you and I.
Will it not harm him?‘Twill cause him to die.
When must he drink?His hour draws near.
Can I not see him?Too much you still fear.
How can this be?‘Tis a terrible price.
Purchasing what?To melt hearts of ice.
What is it for?The highest of goals.
And what is that?The salvation of souls.
Salvation from what?Our weakness and sin.
What have we to gain?A kingdom to win.
Where is this kingdom?It comes from above.
What kind of kingdom?A kingdom of love.
How can love last?By an eternal fire.
Kindled by what?Our God’s own desire.
For what does God long?For His children dispersed.
Is this, then, the cup?  ‘Tis the cup of thirst.
