The Mystery of Snow

Father Andy Davy, MIC, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Plano, Illinois, also writes poetry. Here, we share some of his work and his commentaries on that work in the latest installment of a weekly series.

Snow Fall II
Dizzying snowfall outside
Draws me to the crossroads inside.
Why am I experiencing
The frozen fusion of love and pain
Play and fear
Emanating from this snowy gain,
Each minute building
Towards a tomb or a thrilling,
A wonder or terror,
The child or driver?
Why brought to the paradox of snow?
If thawed out it would be easier to know.
It is the baptism of ice.
In the same field,
We die and are born.
We drive home and without price
Snowmen we build
In the mourn.

This poem speaks about how our perspective changes as we grow from children to adults. And yet both ways of seeing are important to the human condition - the celebrations and the sufferings.
