The Marian Fathers present this Lenten devotional series to help you prepare to receive graces on Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday.
The man believed what Jesus said to him and left. - Jn 4:50
The royal official in today's Gospel has a serious problem. His child is dying. So the man travels from Capernaum to Galilee to ask Jesus, "Sir, come down before my child dies" (Jn 4:49).
Now, Jesus had just criticized His listeners, saying, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe" (Jn 4:48). Jesus tells the royal official to go, and that his son will live. Unlike those Jesus had criticized, the royal official trusts Jesus' word. No sign is needed.
It's interesting that the official didn't insist that Jesus go with him to Capernaum, which was about 17 to 23 miles away. Instead, because of this man's trust, his son receives an immediate healing. We know this because the official meets slaves on the way who confirm the precise hour the fever subsided - the same time as Jesus' pronouncement.
What did the royal official get right? He went to Jesus for help, he trusted Jesus' word, and he acted in obedience to Him.
Prayer: Merciful Lord, may my actions show my trust in You.
