Father Andy Davy, MIC, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Plano, Illinois, also writes poetry. Here, we share some of his work and his commentaries on that work in the latest installment of a weekly series.
Only Comes Once
Restful soft snow
Upon the still pasture
Only comes once.
Shimmering silent flakes
The dancing moonlit tempest
Only comes once.
Delicate warmth of
Ice upon the tongue
Only comes once.
Gleeful shrill of Baby's first snow -
Crunching, falling, eating, crying, nuzzling
Only comes once.
So get up and go play!
Don't miss the symphony found everyday ...
For it only comes once.
This poem reminds us of The Sacrament of the Present Moment by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade. The beauty of God's creation is given to us as the symphony of His smile, and it is found in each moment of the day. If we have eyes to see, each moment can be given to us as an elixir against spiritual weariness and sloth. These poetic scenes speak of the few moments found in the fresh snowfall and in the gift of children. These "only come once" to the extent that we can repeatedly look through fresh eyes.
