Moses said to the people: "Today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and doom." - Dt 30:15

"And the next one to be voted off the television show is ... ." It's time for a commercial!

This trope of a commercial break cliffhanger keeps us tuned in as we wait for a scene's resolution. In today's readings, we have cliffhangers of sorts.

At this point in Deuteronomy, God tells Moses to proclaim the Law to a new generation of Israelites. In chapters 28 and 29, Moses has already reminded them of the consequences of not following the Lord and the blessings of turning to Him. By chapter 30, it is time to decide. We repeatedly see the words "today," "now," and "this day."

A choice appears in today's psalm as well: Hope in the Lord, and be blessed and prosperous; or follow the wicked, and see your works fade away. In the Gospel reading, again we're presented with a choice - to follow Him by taking up our cross daily, or not. It marks Jesus' first prediction of the Passion, but He also tells of the Resurrection.

This is no time to cut to a commercial. Don't let yourself be distracted by the things of this world. Choose God now.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I offer You my own daily crosses, in union with Your sacrifice, for my salvation and for others. Amen.
