How Do You Teach?

The Marian Fathers present this Lenten devotional series to help you prepare to receive graces on Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday.

Readings: Dt 4:1, 5-9; Ps 147:12-13, 15-16, 19-20; Mt 5:17-19
Diary: 568, 667, 1304

"Teach them to your children and to your children's children." - Dt 4:9

"Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words." This quote is widely attributed to St. Francis. His recruit, who would come to be known as St. Anthony of Padua, similarly said, "Actions speak louder than words. Let your words teach and your actions speak."

All of our readings today remind people that actions communicate. The people of Israel are unique. They have received the laws of God. The Lord tells His people to carefully observe His word. What will happen? Other nations will notice their wisdom and intelligence, and deem them a great nation. He tells them not to forget what they've learned, but be sure to teach the next generations.

In today's Gospel, Jesus teaches a similar message:

Whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven (Mt 5:19).

Others are learning from us, so bring the Gospel to all you meet. With or without words.

Prayer: Dear Lord, may my example always bear witness to Your goodness and mercy.
