"I am the light of the world." - Jn 8:12
There's a meme in social media that says "training to be a parent." It shows a man stepping barefooted onto Lego® parts. No doubt many parents have taken the same painful steps onto unseen pieces in the dark.
In our first reading today, two prestigious elders - both judges - are steeped in figurative darkness. They have wretched plans for the beautiful Susanna. She is the wife of Joakim, a man who had them as frequent guests at his house. They warn Susanna that if she does not yield to their sexual demands, they will falsely accuse her of having a tryst with a young man. How did these two men stray so far from what was good and just?
When the old men saw her enter every day for her walk, they began to lust for her. They suppressed their consciences; they would not allow their eyes to look to heaven, and did not keep in mind just judgments (Dan 13:8-11).
Jesus says in today's Gospel, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
We need His light in our souls. Unless light shines on our sins and sinful inclinations, we will die in our sins. Take advantage of the many opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during this Lenten season.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, may I humbly come to receive Your light in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
