On Saturday, Sept. 12, the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy had its first booth to recruit volunteers since the coronavirus pandemic began.
It was a beautiful day with sunny skies. Many people visited, eager and ready to receive the Sacraments, and many of them also indicated a willingness to help!
The purpose of the volunteer booth was twofold: first, to thank people who volunteer at their own local parishes or churches, and second, to share opportunities for volunteering at the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy, even during this pandemic.
The Marian Fathers at the Shrine have not allowed COVID to deter them from distributing the Sacraments. In order to continue to sustain these lifegiving initiatives, the Shrine needs volunteers all seven days of the week. Specifically, we need volunteers to help welcome pilgrims as they arrive, attendants to explain and direct the drive-through Confessions, and ushers at the Mass.
"This is the first time we have tried to develop a year-round volunteer program," said Peter Markavage, coordinator of volunteers. "So far, we have been pleased, but we could really use more help throughout the week to ensure everything is moving optimally."
He also emphasized his and the Shrine rector's appreciation for the hard work of the current year-round volunteers and how thankful and impressed they are at the volunteers' generosity in stepping up during these difficult times.
"The volunteers who have stepped up since COVID began have been essential," said Peter. "I truly believe they have received graces from the Lord Jesus that we will not know about this side of eternity."
He said, "Potential volunteers should know that in addition to our prayers and thanks, we have a few earthly benefits available to them for their efforts as well!"
