Of Babes and Oceans

Father Andy Davy, MIC, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Plano, Illinois, also writes poetry. Here, we share some of his work and his commentaries on that work in the latest installment of a weekly series.

Return

The Womb of Water
Calls, "Return"
By caress
Of wind, wave, and light.
An echo of
Primordial Seas
Where Spirit hovered,
And played forth my life.
Oceans
Beckon my heart
In a trinity of motion
Igniting
Inward pulse from
Their outward electricity
Reenter the immersion!
Trust the buoyant echo
Of what matters
In life.

This came after watching the film "Moana," and then experiencing the joy of floating in the calm ocean waters, feeling the womb-like security of children, and being reminded to return daily to waters of my baptismal day.

Christmas

Little light
In winter's night
Leads to manger's
Humble might.

This short poem came while watching one of my young persons with disabilities lead his family into my parish church building, just to sit and be still before the tabernacle. The little ones, often overlooked, show us how to discover the power of the Babe born in Bethlehem.
