Of Toddlers and Trust

Father Andy Davy, MIC, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Plano, Illinois, also writes poetry. Here, we share some of his work and his commentaries on that work in the latest installment of a weekly series.

Toddler Angst
Why do I so fear that sleep of rest?
My daily breathing, last best
Of consciousness,
Like a child who clings
To their blanket controlling,
Keeping monsters at bay,
So long as the shadows stay
Safely under the bed.

But my binky has betrayed me!

For comfort's safety has
Brought chains to my eyes,
Giving the shadow spawn
A breakaway,
As the red-light, green-light flies
To a close.

Conspired into the doze
Grudgingly? No,
Gratefully ... until the next woes.

This humorous experience inside the mind of a 2-year-old battling to stay awake is more seriously a contemplation on the struggle to entrust our frailty and mortality to the mercy of God. "Father, into your hands I entrust my Spirit."
