Correction

So they tried to arrest him ... - Jn 7:30

At the end of one broadcast, a famous TV anchor stated the wrong day of the week. Live on camera, his colleague gently corrected, "We know you meant to say the other day." The anchor promptly exclaimed, "Oh! Thank you!"

Not everyone accepts correction as graciously and gratefully. Look at today's reading from Wisdom:

Let us lie in wait for the righteous one, because he is annoying to us; he opposes our actions, Reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training (2:12).

They resemble the people in today's Gospel reading. Jesus calls out to them:

"You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true. I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me." So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come (Jn 7:28-30).

Even after considering that the authorities may have accepted Jesus as the Messiah, the crowd still chooses their pride over wisdom and life. The Book of Proverbs has a word for people who won't accept correction: fool.

Prayer: Lord, help me to gratefully accept correction that will lead me closer to You.
