Fake News

The soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed - Mt 28:15

Even after Jesus' Death and Resurrection, there are still three groups spreading news: those who know the truth and share it; those who tell falsehoods; and those who won't defend the truth. We meet them in today's Gospel reading. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary are "fearful yet overjoyed" witnesses. The self-important chief priests and elders deliberately spread lies. And the guards accept bribes to alter their account of what they know to be true.

The truth matters. It's part of the Eighth Commandment. Here are some enlightening words about truth from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

Offenses against the truth express by word or deed a refusal to commit oneself to moral uprightness: they are fundamental infidelities to God ... (2464).

The duty of Christians to take part in the life of the Church impels them to act as witnesses of the Gospel and of the obligations that flow from it. This witness is a transmission of the faith in words and deeds. (2472). 270

To lie is to speak or act against the truth in order to lead someone into error. By injuring man's relation to truth and to his neighbor, a lie offends against the fundamental relation of man and of his word to the Lord (2483).

Prayer: Lord, may my words, actions, and life bear witness to You in truth.
