A Hallmark Card for Jesus

To celebrate the feast day of St. Brigid of Ireland (Feb. 1), the patron saint of poets, we present this original composition by a Marian Helper.

A Hallmark Card for Jesus

By Anne Kristen Harewell Justus Ryecroft Bennett-Colaricci

Walking alone,
Or so I gleaned,
One who is with me,
Remained sight unseen.

Familiar crunching,
From steps in snow,
White fleece covered all,
With moon’s dewy glow.

The further I went,
The deeper I sank,
Permeating cold through my boots,
Breaching top leather ranks.

As it melted down,
Neige into water,
It froze yet again,
Feet beginning to falter.

Wind whisking about,
Cacophony of noise,
No steps to be heard,
Hope quickly destroyed.

Yet as I dropped,
Collapse was prevented.
Strong arms enclosed me,
Before losing my senses.

Awaking with warmth,
Yet not solely the fire,
Heat deep in my soul,
Body taxed, truly tired.

Next morning I woke,
Kind eyes turned to mine,
Smiles changed between us,
My body now fine.

Questioned His gaze,
He let me to know,
I had never been left,
To die in the snow.

Next time forget not,
After kvetching and moans,
Ask for His help,
You will not be alone.

Next time forget not,
Another does care.
Ask for His help.
He will always be there.

Long before his official declaration as Patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1870, Canada was already consecrated to St. Joseph (feast day: March 19), the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and foster-father of Jesus.

He is author of the earliest recorded systematic teachings of the Catholic faith. He suffered persecution and banishment for adherence to the truths of the faith. Ultimately, he was declared a Doctor of the Church for his exemplary writings explaining the tenets of the faith. He is St. Cyril of Jerusalem (315-386 A.D.). whose feast we celebrate on March 18.

“Every priest who preaches the Word of God in times of persecution,” Blessed Elías del Socorro Nieves said, “has no escape; he will die like Jesus on the Cross, with arms tied.” His feast day is March 10.
