Have Mercy

"So the Lord changed his mind about the punishment he had threatened to inflict on his people." - Ex 32:14

Saint Faustina records a frightening event in her Diary. She saw an angel sent by God to deliver punishment due to "a certain place." She implored the angel to hold off so the world could do penance, but to no avail. Then she had a vision in which her soul was swept up before the Throne of God:

I found myself pleading with God for the world with words heard interiorly. As I was praying in this manner, I saw the Angel's helplessness: he could not carry out the just punishment which was rightly due for sins. Never before had I prayed with such inner power as I did then (474).

What she prayed was the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, included at the end of this booklet. The Chaplet is a prayer of intercession, that is, a prayer offered on behalf of others. Throughout Scripture, including today's readings, God's people are encouraged to intercede or pray for one another. Today, we see Moses' example as he intercedes for the Israelites, pleading with the Lord to give mercy instead of justice.

Today, we can intercede for others, asking for mercy for the sake of Jesus' sorrowful Passion.

Prayer: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion have mercy on us and on the whole world (Diary, 476).
