"And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'" - Mt 25:40
An old printing company in New England would, for one week each year, assign managers to experience the plant's less glamorous jobs. They worked with ink-stained machines. They stood on hard floors in noisy work areas. They lifted heavy boxes.
After the week was done, one manager announced with relief, "Whew! Now I understand what it's like to be a worker in that department." A colleague corrected, "No, you don't. Because you know that next week, you're going back to your comfortable chair in a quiet office. The others won't."
Our Lenten practices of fasting and almsgiving should help us to identify with those who are less well off than we are. We have been given mercy. And, when God gives us mercy, He fills us to overflowing. We have a responsibility to pour out this mercy to others.
Let's not confuse this with simply doing good deeds. Our motivation has to be love of God and neighbor. Jesus tells us in today's Gospel that when we perform a deed of mercy, we do it to Jesus. One day, we will be judged accordingly.
Prayer: Lord, help me to see Your face in everyone I meet. May I always strive to reflect Your mercy to others.
