"This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." - Mt 17:5
Today's Gospel recalls a momentous event: the Transfiguration, when Jesus' closest disciples were given a glimpse of His glory. Before His triumphal entrance into Jerusalem, Jesus climbed to a high point on Mount Tabor with Peter, James, and John. While Jesus prays, the disciples see His appearance change, shining like brilliant light. Then, they saw, conversing with Him, Moses and Elijah, who represent the Law and the prophets that bore testimony to Him.
Despite this mystical backdrop, the disciples are not afraid. As Peter confi rms, "It is good that we are here" (Mt 17:4). It's not until they hear a voice from the cloud over them that the disciples "fell prostrate and were very much afraid" (Mt 17:6).
We know God's Word can and should be trusted, as our earlier readings today remind us. So what is God's message? "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him" (Mt 17:5).
A couple things stand out here. One: The Father does more than confirm the identity of Jesus as His Son. The Father gives a command to "listen to Him." Two: Notice that after the disciples receive the divine command to listen to Jesus, the first thing they hear Him say is, "Rise, and do not be afraid."
Prayer: Jesus, I trust in You! Save me from fear.
