An ironic disconnect between intent and action shows up in today's Gospel reading. The Pharisees have broadened their phylacteries and wear extra long tassels. These symbols were worn based on a literal reading of Deuteronomy 6:8 and Numbers 15:38-40. The figurative meaning is to meditate upon the Law constantly, and to practice it.
Was it wrong for the Pharisees to wear large signs of their faith? No. Actually, it's a good idea to have visual aids that remind us to walk with the Lord.
So why does Jesus criticize them? The flaw lies in their motive: to be seen by men. They desire greater respect, status, and authority. Their goal wasn't to please God.
What does God want from His people? Look at today's first reading:

Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes; cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan's plea, defend the widow (Is 1:16-17).
If the Word of God is important to us, our actions must show it. Simply put, act with justice and mercy. Literally.
Prayer: Merciful Lord, grant me the grace of a pure intention to serve You in all I do this day.
