"I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the kingdom of heaven." - Mt 5:20
An amusing detergent commercial shows a young man whose father left him a note with step-by-step instructions on how to do his own laundry. The note says, "Spray and scrub anything with a stain. Soak the smelly clothes. Wash the really dirty clothes separately."
The clothes are so offensive that the son lifts them all into the washer with a hockey stick and tosses in a detergent pod. When his parents return, they are impressed that their son did the laundry and that the clothes look and smell clean. "But you didn't fold it," the dad points out. "That wasn't in the note," replies the son with a smile.
The Pharisees mentioned in today's Gospel aren't getting the full job done either. And Jesus warns His disciples how serious a matter it truly is. Jesus gives His disciples instances of what the Law says, followed by "but I say to you." He isn't negating the Law. He shows the fuller demands of the spirit of the Law. Jesus has come not to undo the Law, but to fulfill it.
For the third day in a row, the Gospel reading reminds us of our responsibility to treat others with dignity and mercy whether in private, in public, or even in our own minds. Our very entrance into Heaven depends on our making that next step.
Prayer: Lord, I surrender to You my most challenging relationships, and I ask for Your grace to be loving.
