Ulterior Motives

And the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus too ... - Jn 12:10

Today, we are at a celebratory dinner to honor Jesus. He had raised Lazarus (the brother of Mary and Martha) from the dead. Mary anoints Jesus with expensive oils - enough for the fragrance to carry through the house. The extravagance is a sign of her gratitude.

So why does Judas criticize Mary for using costly oils to anoint Jesus? Judas claims his criticism came because the oils could have been sold to help the poor. The passage, however, tells us differently: He did not care about the poor. He cared for himself. He was a thief.

At the same time, a large crowd of the Jews have found out Jesus is there. They want to see Him, but also to see Lazarus, the man whom Jesus raised from the dead. There are those who are not sincerely attentive to this good news. The chief priests don't express any doubts that Jesus performed this sign. Instead, they are more concerned that more of the Jews were turning away and believing in Jesus because of Lazarus. The chief priests are now plotting to kill Lazarus as well as Jesus.

Are we distracted from God's mercy by worldly concerns? Do we honor those whom God anoints?

Prayer: Lord, may I serve You sincerely and wholeheartedly.
