A Small Detail

Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." - Jn 4:7

Jesus and His disciples are traveling through Samaria as the quickest route to Galilee. Many Jews of the time would cross the Jordan just to avoid Samaria. They looked down upon the Samaritans as second-rate Jews.

While the disciples go to buy food, Jesus talks with the woman at the well. Since Samaritan women were regarded by Jews as ritually impure, Jews were forbidden to drink from any vessel they had handled. So she is taken aback by Jesus' request for a drink. As they talk, she realizes He is a prophet. And then even more:

The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything" (Jn 4:25-26).

At that moment (Jn 4:27), two things happen: 1. The disciples return, and 2. The woman leaves to tell others about Jesus. It's interesting that many Samaritans believe in Jesus because of the woman's testimony, but once they hear Him for themselves, many more then know that He truly is the "savior of the world" (Jn 4:39-42).

We know the woman placed a great deal of trust in Jesus, who told her He could give her the "living water" of grace. We know, but not just because of her testimony in the town. The passage gives us another detail: She left her water jar.

Prayer: Lord, may my words and actions reflect my trust in You, and lead others to You.
