So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. - Jn 7:43
On Oct. 13, 2019, Pope Francis canonized John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890), a man who was committed to following the truth regardless of the consequences.
As a classics scholar, Newman examined the early Church Fathers' writings. He discerned that it was the Catholic Church that had preserved all of these teachings. This realization led to his conversion from Anglicanism to Catholicism - despite it costing his position at Oxford University, along with many friends, family, and his reputation. You can now find Newman Clubs at secular or non-Catholic universities around the world as a source of encouragement for Catholic students.
Our readings today remind us that there is a cost for seeking and acknowledging the truth. We already know that others (such as the man who was blind from birth) have been evicted from the Temple for following Jesus. In today's Gospel reading, the chief priests and Pharisees insult people who recognize Jesus as a prophet or the Christ. They mock Nicodemus, who asks how they could condemn Jesus without first examining His words and actions. Clearly, they have interests other than finding the Truth. How sad that they don't reconsider the consequences.
Prayer: Saint John Henry Newman, pray for us!
