Troubling

"Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me." - Jn 13:21

Did you ever make a big sacrifice to help someone you love - only to have them not accept it? Troubling, isn't it?

In today's Gospel, we read : "Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, 'Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me'" (Jn 13:21). Here, at the Last Supper, Jesus had just offered them His life through the institution of the Eucharist. Judas' betrayal wounds Jesus' Merciful Heart. What greater sacrifice is there than Jesus'? What greater love than His infinite love?

Saint Faustina writes about the pain Jesus feels when souls spurn His love in Holy Communion:

Oh, how painful it is to Me that souls so seldom unite themselves to Me in Holy Communion. ... I love them tenderly and sincerely, and they distrust Me. I want to lavish My graces on them, and they do not want to accept them. They treat Me as a dead object, whereas My Heart is full of love and mercy. In order that you may know at least some of My pain, imagine the most tender of mothers who has great love for her children, while those children spurn her love. Consider her pain. No one is in a position to console her. This is but a feeble image and likeness of My love (Diary, 1447).

Prayer: Lord, help me to remember Your sacrifice and love when I receive You in Holy Communion.
