The Word

Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. - Lk 24:45

Today's Gospel picks up from yesterday. The disciples on the road to Emmaus have now told the other disciples of Jesus and how they had come to recognize Him in the breaking of the bread. Yet, even after hearing their testimony, the disciples still are "startled and terrified" when Jesus appears in their midst (see Lk 24:37). As with the men on the road to Emmaus, Jesus opens their minds to understand the Scriptures (see Lk 24:45). Jesus fulfilled what had been foretold by the prophets for the salvation of mankind. Now, the disciples are witnesses to the need for repentance and forgiveness of sins through Christ.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us some important things about Sacred Scripture:

Still, the Christian faith is not a "religion of the book." Christianity is the religion of the "Word" of God, a word which is "not a written and mute word, but the Word is incarnate and living." If the Scriptures are not to remain a dead letter, Christ, the eternal Word of the living God, must, through the Holy Spirit, "open [our] minds to understand the Scriptures" (108).

Prayer: Merciful Jesus, enlighten my mind so I may know You better.
