Strangely Familiar

"It is the Lord." - Jn 21:7

Today, the Risen Jesus reveals Himself for a third time. Jesus is standing on the shore at the Sea of Tiberias. The account has details that are familiar to His disciples and to us.

Seven: Remember what this number means? (See March 17.) It can symbolically mean "fullness." In this case, the seven disciples suggest the fuller community of disciples.

In a boat: The first time Jesus called Simon Peter, the fisherman was putting his net in the sea.

John is first: The "disciple whom Jesus loved" is first (ahead of Peter) to recognize Jesus. He also was first in their run to the empty tomb.

Fish and bread: Remember the multiplication of loaves and fishes?

Gave bread to them: The language here reminds us of the Last Supper.

They recognize Him: None of the disciples dare to ask, "Who are you?" because they realize it is the Lord. What's new here? They recognized Him even before the breaking of the bread.

Prayer: Lord, help me to recognize You in the everyday moments of my life.
